The Battle for Sami Rights in Sweden

Thirty kilometres from the Swedish world heritage site of Laponia, plans to introduce a controversial new iron ore mine in Gallok (also known as Kallak) are under way.
The opinions of the 3,000 people living in the nearby town of Jokkmokk are polarised.
Tor, a father of two, reclaims his Sami surname and joins a group of indigenous and environmental activists to stop British company Beowulf from mining on the ancestral lands of the indigenous Sami people.
But he faces strong political and economic forces, local rivals and a Sami collective that hesitate to accept him as one of them.
His old school friend, Kjell, an advocate for the new mine, believes that the new job opportunities will revitalise the town - the population of Jokkmokk has been declining for decades - and is willing to resort to dirty tactics to ensure the mine is greenlit.
The Swedish government weighs up the mining-concession bid with the traditional landowners' claims that the mine will destroy their livelihood of reindeer herding.

Sorbs want unity between Domowina and Sejm

The dispute over the representation of the Sorbs and Wends in Lusatia should come to an end. "The public has no sympathy for Gezerre between Sejm and Domowina," said Marcel Braumann, head of the Domowina Regional Association Hoyerswerda, on Wednesday the German Press Agency in Dresden. The task of the Domowina is to bring together all people who are committed to the Sorbian.

After elections, the Initiative Serbski Sejm was constituted in the autumn of 2018 as the Sorbian parliament. The leadership of the Federal Lusatian Sorbs (Domowina) but so far questions the legitimacy of the Sejm and insists on its status as an advocacy. At the base one desires unity. Braumann argued that especially in the Hoyerswerda region, togetherness is already an everyday reality.

Braumann had recently shaken hands with Sejm-president Edith Pjenkowa at a meeting. The Serbian Sejm spoke of a "bang". The Sorbian Parliament consists of 24 deputies - twelve Wends and Sorbs - and desires autonomy in education and culture. The states of Brandenburg and Saxony do not yet support this and refer to already existing institutions. About 60,000 members of the Slavic minority live in Lusatia.

Frisian National Party defends the Fryske Akademy in the Government Agreement on Frisian Language and Culture

The Frisian National Party (FNP) wants a solid and robust scientific, qualitative and financial future for the Fryske Akademy (Frisian Academy). In the matter of the College of the Provincial Executive of Friesland, the party demands attention. This led to the recently concluded Government Agreement on Frisian Language and Culture (BFTK), which states that in the summer of 2019 the position will be reviewed. The FNP is now asking for clarification on the use of the Provincial Government.

The FNP wants the Fryske Akademy to remain a fully-fledged and robust scientific institute, which operates as an institution under the institutional and research order of the KNAW. This is to ensure that at least the same high scientific standards will continue to work in the future.

If the province of Fryslân delivers a large financial contribution every year, it is also important that a large amount of ownership remains over the future of the Fryske Akademy. As for the FNP, the existing 'education agreement' must also be implemented on a material, financial and legal basis.

Finally, the FNP wants to know what the imposition of the Board will be to ensure that the financial position of the Fryske Akademy will be solid for now and in the future. And to, if necessary, join the Academy.

Sinn Féin launches scathing attack on British Government over its 'blatant disregard' for Ireland

Sinn Féin has accused the British Government of showing a "blatant disregard" for Brexit's impact on Ireland and the Good Friday Agreement. Former Brexit secretary David Davis admitted Downing Street had a "blind spot" when it came to Brexit and Ireland, saying more should have been done to resolve problems such as the Irish border.

But speaking on BBC Radio Ulster's Good Morning Ulster show today, Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald dismissed Mr Davis' claim and said it was more a case "active hostility" than blissful ignorance.

Her comments come as Theresa May attempts to resolve a crisis which saw the PM narrowly survive a vote of no confidence in her government tabled by Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn yesterday.

Mrs May survived by just 19 votes, 325 to 306, a day after the House of Commons overwhelmingly rejected her EU withdrawal deal in a record defeat.
'Actively hostile'

"The hostility has been absolutely manifest for some time now," Mrs McDonald said this morning.

"I would regard the Boris Johnson, Jacob Rees-Mogg view of the world to be utterly, not blind to Irish interests, but actively hostile to them.

"I don't think this is a case of blissful ignorance on the part of strong elements of the British establishment, I think this is the policy of 'Britannia rules the waves'... a harking back to an imperial past".

The nationalist leader added that the British state "has more than a blind spot" when it comes to Ireland.

"They have a blatant disregard for the international obligations under that international agreement [the Good Friday Agreement]," she said.

Kramer, Frisian National Party: "The Frisian agriculture must gradually grow towards biological"

Johannes Kramer leader of the Frisian National Party (FNP) has released the speech that he gave for his party the kick-off for the coming provincial elections. "The Frisian agriculture must gradually grow towards biological", he says. Kramer explains that agriculture, which is biological, is less vulnerable to possible loss of derogation and becomes profitable again. ,, Not only business economics, but also ecological. That means a ground-based livestock farming that is in balance with nature. ”

Kramer acknowledges that government support is needed so that farmers can take the step. The Frisian leader focuses on the European Union. He predicts that "Organic farming in that light can become a hopeful perspective for many. That gives us the opportunity in Friesland to anticipate this and walk ahead. So it's especially a great opportunity. By emphasizing the biological quality as a unique selling point, the Frisian farmer can repack the historic leading position in world dairy countries. In twenty or thirty years you are an organic farmer or you are not a farmer. ”

Bart De Wever, N-VA: “Confederalism is coming”

“Confederalism is coming. The ungovernability of Belgium cannot be allowed to continue. And anyone wanting that confederalism has only one option: the N-VA.” N-VA Chairman Bart De Wever gave a detailed explanation about the decision of the party to put him forward as a candidate for Minister-President in the May elections. Bart De Wever emphasised that the given political context obliges him to step out of his comfort zone in Antwerp in order to steer the N-VA as strongly as possible through the elections. “Being a vital player in Flanders is job number one for the N-VA,” said Bart De Wever.

Reconquista

After 26 May, the N-VA wishes to be able to form a new Flemish Government as soon as possible in order to play a stronger role in the federal negotiations. Bart De Wever referred to the reconquista that the PS is planning. “Elio Di Rupo has been speaking in Dutch again as of lately, a sign that he clearly wants to become Prime Minister once more. On the Flemish side, there is a green-blue axis that will try to form a government without the N-VA. If that happens, it will be the end of everything we want in terms of migration and social-economic reforms.”

Republican party Saoradh hit out at detention of vice chair twice in a week

The Derry branch of republican party Soaradh have hit out at the arrest of their vice chair for the second time in a week.
A spokesman for the group say the man was detained on Saturday in what they described as “a heavy handed early morning raid on his family home. “
Saoradh representative Paddy Gallagher said: “Such is the vindictiveness of the Crown Force personnel, they told the wife of the Republican that “he will be missing his daughters confirmation.
“Despite the fact that Republicans are more than accustomed to raids and detentions, the families of those being dragged out of their homes are left facing the consequences.

“Twice in a short space of time this family home has been targeted in early morning raids with young children being woken from their beds, having personal items searched, electronic items seized and school work destroyed.
“This raid is all the more vindictive though as the family were preparing for their daughters confirmation today. This is clearly a case of harassment and an attempt to disrupt the lives of this family”.

Rally on Sunday 17th to save the teaching of Occitan

« A language is well worth a cathedral

(Una lenga val ben una catedrala) »

- Joan Bodon (Occitan writer)

The French minister of national education, J-M Blanquer, and the rectorat (school district) of Toulouse have decided to destroy the teaching of Occitan:
At the national state level, all incentives to choose Occitan for the French baccalaureate are suppressed and Occitan is prevented from having the same status as Latin-Greek.
At the school district level, all the financial means previously granted to schools for Occitan are axed. Due to a lack of sufficient financing very few courses of Occitan will survive.
The decisions made by the French State are at odds with many commitments made to local authorities. France puts itself in an illegal situation by flouting the code of education and even the constitution of the republic.

Occitan is one of the fundamental features of the identity of Occitan regions (Occitanie, Provence, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and Nouvelle Aquitaine).
To have a good knowledge and understanding of our territories, the millenary language and culture they convey cannot be sidestepped. Forgetting Occitan is not a sign of modernity but a loss of substance.
For more than 40 years, the doors of the schools in the Toulouse district have progressively opened to accept the teaching of Occitan in a remarkably consistent manner.
Further to this brutal backtrack, the Partit de la Nacion Occitana, Lo Clusèl, the Centre Régional des Enseignants d'Occitan de Toulouse (CREO), FELCO, IEO, Calandretas, Convergéncia occitana and other Occitan organisations call on all those who are attached as they are to the respect of linguistic and cultural diversity in our territories, who support a voluntary and ambitious policy for Occitan and its full development within schools, to demonstrate:

FNP to vote against a sand mining facility in the IJsselmeer

The Frisian National Party (FNP) in De Fryske Marren municipality is set to vote against a sand mining facility in the IJsselmeer, which means that the divisive plans will not move forward.
Jan Volbeda of the FNP told Omrop Fryslân, “We do not know what the consequences of gas extraction will be, and experts who have assessed the plans have no come to a consensus. That is reason enough for us to vote against it.”
Opponents of the facility, which would have been five kilometres offshore from the town of Oudemirdum, have been vocal about their concerns about noise and light pollution in a Natura 2000 designated area, a network of protected habitats across the European Union. The Leeuwarder Courant reports that the factory was meant to be in operation for at least 30 years and was projected to extract two million tons of sand annually.
Minister of Infrastructure and Water Management Cora van Nieuwenhuizen has said that she will respect the council’s decision. The facility would have been operated by Smals, a sand mining company from Nijmegen. Stopping the plans in their tracks means that the municipality will miss out on 100,000 euros a year: Smals had agreed to pay De Fryske Marren five cents per cubic meter of sand extracted.
The FNP has seven seats in the municipal council, and along with five other opposition party members, there is enough support to vote down the sand extraction facility. CDA and VVD, with 12 seats, were in favour of the plans moving forward, but Volbeda says that he does not believe the disagreement will create discord within the coalition. Over the weekend, a member of the VVD faction had a brick thrown through the window of his home, an act which he believed was connected to his support for the sand extraction plans.
The vote was meant to take place in November, but the council wanted to await the outcome of parliamentary questions on the plans last year.

Sami National Day celebrations in Norway

Sami flags were flying all over Norway on Tuesday February 6th as the country’s indigenous people celebrated their own national day. From Oslo’s City Hall to remote areas of Finnmark, more Sami elebrations were planned than ever before.

Sami flags were raised Wednesday morning outside the Oslo City Hall, just hours before Queen Sonja, Crown Prince Haakon and Prime Minister Erna Solberg arrived for one of many officials celebrations of Samefolkets dag around the country. PHOTO: Rådhuset i Oslo
free.

The vast majority were, not surprisingly, taking place in the northern regions of Norway, where the majority of Sami live and work. There were seven official celebrations in Finnmark alone, where the city of Alta was also celebrating all week. Troms residents were marking the day in Tromsø, Harstad, Nordreisa and Kåfjørd, while fully 11 events were planned in Nordland, from Narvik and Bodø to Mosjøen and Kabelvåg.

Oslo, Bergen and Trondheim had some major events planned, but also Oslo’s western suburb of Bærum was honouring the Sami people for the first time, with special services at the Østerås Church at 6pm followed by refreshments and entertainment. Bærum’s culture chief would also attend.

The national government’s official website decked out its front page in the colours of the Sami flag, which also was waving outside Parliament and the Oslo City Hall. Prime Minister Erna Solberg officially congratulated the Sami and noted that flying the Norwegian and Sami flags together “reminds us that we share a common history and that we together must take responsibility for the future.” She further noted that “Norway consists of two peoples on one territory.”

The Sami nation itself extends over the northern regions of Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia. Norway’s Sami population is the largest, at an estimated 55,000, compared to 20,000 in Sweden, 8,000 in Finland and 2,000 in Russia. Norway’s Sami Parliament is located in Karasjok in Finnmark.

Aili Keskitalo, president of the Sami Parliament (Sametinget), is worried about ongoing harassment of Sami and hopes the national day celebrations will boost awareness and knowledge of Sami culture. PHOTO: Sametinget

Its president, Aili Keskitalo, was congratulating all Sami on Wednesday but also worrying about ongoing harassment of Sami and other ethnic groups. Norway’s first-ever conviction last week of a Norwegian charged with making hateful online comments about Sami was widely seen as a step in the right direction, even though the defendant in his 50s has appealed.

“I still wonder what the consequences (of harassment) can be for Sami youth and children,” Keskitalo told newspaper Dagsavisen. “Do they feel shame or guilt over being Sami?” Harassment is nothing new, she said, claiming that she grew up with it herself in Finnmark, where newspapers published offensive letters to the editor and comedy sketches featured Sami as clowns.

“As a minority, such harassment can be felt more strongly,” Keskitalo said. She thinks last week’s conviction was important, and hopes Wednesday’s official and private celebrations around the country will help further knowledge of the Sami culture and heritage, and consciousness of Norway’s own indigenous people.

“The day is a way for us to show that we’re here and who we are,” she told Dagsavisen.

There are 10 official Sami languages spread over four countries, with three main Sami dialects spoken in Norway. The language is under constant pressure and was even banned at one point by Norwegian officials who later apologized for the discrimination. A state commission is in the process of investigating efforts over the years to force Sami to become Norwegian (called fornorskningspolitikk), along with other discrimination against the Sami, Kvenefolk and Norskfinner.

“I hope we can establish a common base of knowledge that will become part of the Norwegian curriculum,” Keskitalo said. “It will be a challenge to get others than Sami to realize this is important. I hope it leads to a bigger and better fellowship for everyone who lives within Norway’s borders.”

Sami culture and especially Sami music and the distinctive form of singing called joik are more popular than ever, with a young Sami woman from Tana in Finnmark even winning Norway’s Stjernekamp (Battle of the Stars) last year. Ella Marie Hætta Isaksen will be performing in Oslo Wednesday night at the popular Rockefeller Music Hall along with the legenday Mari Boine. The concert has been sold out for weeks. Boine attributes the popularity of Sami music to its “natural tones.” They’re part of the Sami’s national heritage, she told news bureau NTB, “a native voice that’s unpolished.” Boine was a pioneer in the art and is gratified to see so many young Sami winning acclaim now.
“When those of us who’ve been at this for a while see the young performers, and the pride they have over being Sami, then we can allow ourselves to lean back and think ‘this is moving forward,'” Boine, who has performed several times at Oslo’s Opera House, told NTB. She was also taking part in Sami musical events this week at the city’s university Oslo Met.
