UN criticizes Finland against the Sámi nation

The Human Rights Committee criticized Finland of violating the rights of the Sámi. The UN Human Rights Committee considers that the Supreme Administrative Court of Finland acted inappropriately in accepting persons previously rejected by the Sámi Parliament in the electoral roll of the Sámi Parliament.

The Committee's objections relate to the decision of the Supreme Administrative Court of Finland to add 93 people to the electoral roll in 2015. The Sámi Parliament complained about the matter. In its view, the Supreme Administrative Court’s decision violated the Sámi indigenous rights, including the right to self-determination.

The Committee emphasized that the Sámi have a sovereign right to make their own decisions. It recommends that Finland amend the Sámi Parliamentary Act so that the definition of voting rights respects the Sámi rigfht of self-determination. In addition, the Committee recommends that the Finnish State take action to prevent further violations of the law in the future.
