In the 140 Flemish municipalities where Vlaams Belang (Flemish Interest) has elected people since the municipal elections of 14 October, the party will submit a proposal for a foreign nation tax in the new city council. That was announced on November 24th on the mandatarissenday of the Vlaams Belang in Edegem, where the 379 newly elected provincial and regional council members gathered under the slogan 'Eerst onze mensen' (First our people).
At the beginning of last year, the federal government decided that cities and municipalities could levy a fee of € 50 for the renewal or extension of a temporary residence card for foreign nationals. It is awarded to, among others, asylum seekers and labor migrants. The preparation of the necessary documents will result in an additional workload and costs for the local authorities. Moreover, citizens with the Belgian nationality also have to pay for their identity card. According to Vlaams Belang, it is therefore no more than just that non-Belgians also do that.
